The Silk Road Mission Statement

To realize and cultivate within oneself the creative and healing power of yoga

To understand that as our physical practice evolves, changes are also taking place internally.

To promote relaxation as a simple and effective tool for refinement of the body, mind and spirit.

To examine the many cultures of the world and the various ways of transcendence.

To increase our awareness of our multidimensional nature.

About Daniel Hickman

Daniel had his first yogic experience in college with his first acting teacher, Roberta Gasbarre, director of The Smithsonian Institution's Discovery Theater and The Washington Revels, and a Zen Buddhist.  He continued his movement studies in Guanajuato, Mexico at the Estudio Busqueda de Pantomima Teatro with Sigfrido Aguilar, an internationally known mime.

In Washington, D. C., he studied the Dunham Technique at The Dance Place with Dr. Sherill Berryman-Johnson of Howard University.  He danced latin with the Maru Montero Mexican Folkloric Company and modern with Tony Powell/Music and Movement.  As an artist-educator, he worked with The Barns of Wolf Trap, The Kennedy Center, BAPA's Imagination Stage and primarily with the Smithsonian Institution's Discovery Theater.

After performing for over 8 years both nationally and overseas, Daniel felt the urge to follow his higher calling as a yoga instructor.  He has since been studying Interdisciplinary Yoga at the Nosara Yoga Institute with Amba and Don Stapleton, Phd.  He honors the school's theory that "yoga is an inquiry," and encourages others to find what styles work for them.

Daniel teaches hatha type yoga, differing from gentle to intense.  He draws upon a wide variety of healing and strengthening methods from both eastern yogas and western mind-body sciences.  He is also an experienced body worker and personal trainer.  His hobbies include rockclimbing, surfing and tai chi.
